Arabic is written from right to left, and consists of 17 characters, with the addition of dots placed above or below some of these characters, thus making altogether 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet. The Arabic script evolved from the Nabataean Aramaic script. There are two main types of written Arabic; the classical Arabic is the language of the classical literature, whereas the modern standard Arabic is today the applied language of the Arabic speaking nations.
