How to select a good Web Designer

Selecting Good Web Designer

Engaging the right designer for your web site is the most important step to building your business on the internet. Follow these steps to do it right:

Most business organizations do not have the expertise to create an online presence through a website. Many options are available to make the web design process simpler which includes free website designing tools, freelancers, etc. Then you also have professional website design organizations. However, finding the right designer for your business is always difficult.

Step 1 - Identify your reason for a website

Determine the reasons that you need the website for. Identify the short-term and long-term goals. If you already have a website, identify what you feel needs improvement. Put down your thoughts about specific issues that your organization and your industry requires in a website including colors, images, layouts, etc.

Step 2 - Identify requirements

Requirements could be constraints of budget in developing your website, number of products and information that you will publish on your website, programming for specific functions on your website, payment facility to sell online, etc.

Step 3 - Fine tune requirements

The above steps will help you to communicate effectively to the service providers and help your to avoid most of the common difficulties in developing your website.

Step 4 - Search webdesigers

Engaging a website designer is going to be difficult given the wide choice available. Shortlist candidates by searching for them on the internet, recommendations of your friends, partners. Don't get intimidated by the physical distance your service provider. Professional service providers are geared to deliver excellent service and are very cost effective too.

Step 5 - Select your webdesigner

Eliminate candidates using various qualifying criteria by selecting the website designer who have their website with their portfolio. Portfolio will help you assess their capabilities in developing fast loading designs, appealing easy to use look and easy to understand website (what is the website about should be clear in 3 seconds).

Other important criteria for selecting candidates are the experience (more number of years=a support service critical for your website), range of services (can they provide all that you want on your website) and the employee strength and skills.

Though freelancers are going to be cheap, their ability to integrate the designs with the hosting webserver and constant availability for long term are questionable. Many organization suffer when the freelancers who registered their domain name, developed or hosted their website go untraceable . Respect your feeling about the webdesigner you are going to select. If you could not develop an understanding with the webdesigner, you must look for another one with technical capabilities and with whom you are more comfortable.

Step 6 - Performance Agreement

List out task to be performed in your agreement defining your role and the role of the webdesigner. Specify the timeline for each of these task to ensure that the project can be monitored and the progress measured as per these timelines. Always include a list of deliverables and terms of payment to avoid unnecessary demands from the webdesigner.

Keep in mind that these are important steps in the growth of your online business. Do not rush into the agreement without going through the above steps. Follow these steps and it will pay you in the long run.
