Afrikaans is one of the two official languages of the Republic of South Africa, the other being English.

Afrikaans is spoken by more than 6 million people worldwide. Afrikaans is spoken in many other countries including Namibia and South Africa. Afrikaans belongs to Indo-European (Germanic subgroup) family of language Afrikaans is an offshoot of 17th-century Dutch brought to South Africa by the first settlers from Holland. Afrikaans has served as the basis for other mixed languages in South Africa and uses words from variety of languages including English, Portuguese, Malay, Bantu languages and Khoisan languages.
